I have a profound love of mermaids. They are such beautiful, mystical creatures and I am smitten with mermaid art. I believe they could be absolutely real. Why not? I hope I bump into one at the beach this Summer. Think about it, humans have only managed to explore about 5% of the ocean floor. That leaves endless room for possibilities! This month I stumbled upon #MerMay on Instagram. It's an art challenge where people draw their take on mermaids all month long. May is practically over but it was fun to follow along and appreciate everyones artistic vision. I also enjoyed people mashing mermaid art up with video game and comicbook characters.

Hey Nubians,

Comicbooks, Art, Toys, Food, And Some Good Brews... What More Can A Geek Girl Ask For?!

I'm super excited to learn about The Five Points Festival and I'm hoping to make an appearance this May in NYC. It's a designer toy and comic convention that will take place for 3 days starting May at Pier 36 in Manhattan’s Lower East Side this Spring.

From what I've seen so far, there's going to be an amazingly talented lineup of artist. The event is a celebration of comic artists and writers, toy designers & more with gourmet food trucks and craft beer presented by Clutter Magazine and Midtown Comics and sponsored by Playcrafting. Can you imagine having a nice buzz while taking in so much culture and roaming around admiring and shopping for things you love?! Sounds freaken fabulous.

See more details below:

"Enthusiasts familiar with art toys will have the chance to meet some of the world’s most iconic artists and brands like Huck Gee, Kidrobot, James Groman, Jason Freeny, Ron English of Popaganda, Simone Legno of Tokidoki, Super7, Tara McPherson, and Mighty Jaxx on the show floor, where they will be featured alongside artists from the U.S., Japan, Germany, Korea, the U.K. and elsewhere, some showcasing in NYC for the first time, and all with unique, original pieces for sale. The festival’s ‘Artist Alley’ will be an intimate, curated showcase of some of the most notable comic and toy art from mainstream and independent creators across the world’s emerging pop art scene - with participants including Annie Wu, Bryan Lee O’Malley, Cliff Chiang, Khary Randolph, Magdalene Visaggio, and Sean Gordon Murphy. Anyone who has attended mainstream art shows or comic cons will find something completely unique at Five Points - a gathering of visual innovators, rebels, creators and the misfits who are driving the future of commercial, counterculture art."

Tickets to Five Points also include access to a gathering of some of NYC’s most outstanding craft breweries and food trucks serving during all regular Festival hours. VIP Ticket holders will also have early access privileges each day of Five Points, as well as entry to the 7th Annual Designer Toy Awards presented by Lagunitas on Friday night, the world’s premier accolade for toy artists, and an all-around excellent party!

Hello Nubians,

Cute Accessories Can Make An Outfit!

A few years back, I was obsessed with Betsey Johnson Purses. I'm not quite sure what happened or why I stopped paying attention to them but I simply did (Boo me!). Lately however, she's been on a cuteness overload mission with her handbags. I simply can't stop starring at them! A lot of them almost resemble cartoon characters or a cartoonish art style. Not only are they adorable, but they are so fashionable. I think every fashion forward girl needs to get her hands on one of these stat! My style is very playful which makes me further appreciate her creations.

Below I've decided to highlight my top 5 favorite bags from her website at the moment.

KITSCH WHALE COSMETIC CASE ($58.00)
I think whales are interesting creatures and this one just happens to be... a bit girly? Who can't appreciate a whale with a bow in her hair! Cosmetic case or not I will rock this as a purse.

KITSCH AVOCADO WRISTLET ($78.00)
OK, I eat Avocado a freakishly overwhelming amount. I find this wristlet super kawaii and unique.

KITSCH FISHY CROSSBODY ($88.00)
I am smitten with the detail on this adorable fishy! Take a look at those scales, super cool! The teal color pop is also perfect. This would make a great Summer purse.

KITSCH TACO WRISTLET ($78.00)
Um, Hello! I live on the West Coast... I think I have to love anything Taco by law ha ha. The wristlet is absolutely a conversation starter... like most of these bags I would have to say. There are also tiny heart studs to add texture.

KITSCH OCTOPUS COSMETIC ($50.98)
Another cosmetic bag I would rock on the regular. I think this one might be my favorite out of all of them. I love this octopus lady's style. The color is precious, her eye makeup is sexy, her pout is cute and to top it off, she's wearing pearls! I'm in love.
I'm hoping to get my hand on one of these soon. Still debating. Betsey Johnson definitely doesn't make it an easy decision. All of these purses and other gorgeous show stoppers can be found on her website HERE.

Which of these is your favorite?

Hey Nubians,

Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions. -Pablo Picasso

I love randomly bumping into talented people on Instagram. I constantly find inspiring fashion, makeup, hair, yoga, art and more. This week, I was taken by the work an artist called Pierre Schmidt, also known as dromsjel.

Have you ever wondered what you would look like if your feelings were visual? Literally shown on your face?

What if instead of feeling something in your chest, your heart, mind or your stomach people could actually see it on you? In the form of shapes, colors, and objects? That's what I think about when I see Pierre Schmidt's work. I feel like it's visual emotions, dripping down your face and just oozing there for as long as that emotion last. A little warped... sometimes your feelings might connect with someones else... You might interpret this differently than I do, but I very much enjoyed studying all of these pieces carefully and how they made me feel. I found myself starring at them for quite long and maybe even discovering new things about myself.

Everything person and thing around us makes us feel something.

Kudos to Pierre Schmidt on his fabulous work!

"Pierre Schmidt, also known as „drømsjel“, was born in 1987 in a small city near Cologne. Holding an apprenticeship at an advertising agency here from 2009 to 2011 before moving to Berlin, where he has lived and worked ever since. drømsjel's artworks float freely between illustration and collage, traditional and digital. The artist splices vintage photographs of well-groomed ladies and gentlemen that evoke the standards of 20th-century propriety, turning them into bastions of surreal visions."

Hello Nubians,

I love Art just as much as I love fashion and beauty. At New York Comic Con you get hit with endless amounts of inspiration at every corner. So many people are talented in so many different ways and when I take it all in, it makes me want to be even more creative.

Below I wanted to give a shout out to a few of my favorite booths. I was already familiar with some of these artist and some were a bit new to me. So much detail, color, cuteness, and hard work. It's like Kawaii-mania! What I also appreciate about a lot of these booths is that there's a big price range. In almost every booth you can find something for as little $10.00 and then they also have more exclusive items that might run you up to $200.00 but it's all worth it. There's a lot of hours on hard work, labor and love here.

Make sure you stop by all of these sites. I'm certain you'll find something you need in your life here. These kinds of shops contain items that make some of the best most unique holiday gifts. Something that people won't be likely to forget.

Zukies

I spoke to Miss Zukie at New York Comic Con and she was an absolute treat. She told me about the cute little creatures and how they're whatever gender you want them to be. At the booth you'll find prints, plushes, stickers, tees, and more.

Miss Zukie also told me that whenever the Zukies are wearing another character, it means they killed it and put it on. I know you may be thinking "whoa, that's dark" but I love the concept. It's quite sinister that these adorable little characters can be so evil but I enjoy entertaining the thought. I also like the other characters involved with the Zukies such as Pikachu, BMO, Hello Kitty and more. The piece with the Zukies afro hair is absolutely gorgeous.  Shop Zukies HERE.

"Zukies are mysterious creatures that do not talk. They communicate with thought bubbles and facial expressions. Zukies intend to generate emotions through their visual thoughts and that is how they create an emotional bond with us." - Miss Zukie

Jelly Koe

Everything seen here from plush, paintings and art prints, comics, zines, and more is created by jellykoe! There's a lot of variety in this booth. Below you'll see the "Slice of Love" plush which was a New York Comic Con exclusive I purchased as a gift for someone... Isn't it the perfect gift for any New Yorker? If you're looking for something similar and cute there's also a very cute burger plush called "Kid Beefy" available on their site. Shop JellyKoe HERE.

Fierce little monster plushes. I have my eyes in the handsome little devil.

The art work of the little monsters on the heads of the people in those classic portraits is one of my favorites from the booth. It's so random and cool. I don't think it's possible to receive anything from this booth and not crack a smile. I had a chat with the artist and they were also immensely friendly.

Little Punk People

"Spooky but Sweet" I think Little Punk People is so inspiring because you will all surely think "Family Goals". This dope company is family art created by 3 people Daniela Fullam, Justin Fullam, and their son Elliott Fullam. Everything they make goes towards there living and right back into Little Punk People so they can keep touring to different shows and conventions. Crazy right? They also have the most entertaining YouTube channel. Check out their videos and shop their collection by heading over HERE.

I am absolutely a new fan of these haunted little characters. The women characters especially are so tortured and beautiful. From their hair to their eye lashes to the lipstick, I need one of these hanging in my home ASAP. On their site you'll be able to shop for a variety of things such as paintings, tote bags, vinyl figures, pillows and home decor.

The mason jars are very adorable and so are the snack bowls. All hand painted.

The Jelly Empire

If you love robots look no further, The Jelly Empire will be your holy grail. Out of all of the artist I featured in this round-up, I've been a fan of Selina Briggs little robot creations for the longest. I have a lot of her little guys framed and hanging in my home and I have also given many away as gifts. I even have the cutest little shirt! You can't wear one of these little guys down the street and not get stopped, it's next to impossible. Selina started her empire with 2D art but it has grown with original art, comics, collaborations, her own line of toys, tees and more! What an amazing accomplishment. She's also seriously one of the most humble, sweetest ladies you'll meet. Check out The Jelly Empire and shop HERE.

The adorable factor here is over whelming. Below you'll see my 2 favorite prints from the convention. There's way too much to pick from #RobotGirlProblems. These pop culture inspired little robots are going to take over the world!

"Meet Jelly the robot. This little robot left his home planet to explore the universe, but one day along his many travels he stumbled upon the human planet called ‘Earth’. He found this a very curious planet and fell in love with the human Pop Culture and now spends his time trying to find his place within it. Jelly made Earth his new home and has invited many of his fellow Robotians to join him."

 The Art of Sketch

The Art Of Sketch is another charming booth I picked up a few prints from. This artist offers something for everyone. As you can see here, the art is inspired by horror, love, comics, movies, and everything pop culture. I'm sure the artist Oscar "Sketch" Navarro also puts a special, personal touch to his work too. One of my favorite prints is "A Fun Day At The Park" which is the skeleton couple. It's also available in a cool pop-up looking version on his website. Shop The Art Of Sketch HERE.

I currently own the Friday the 13th and gave away the Harley Quinn as a gift.

New York Comic Con was a lot of fun. These are only a handful of the amazing artist and creations you'll find at the convention. If you've never been to the convention, make sure you stop by next October.

If you have any questions, drop them in the comment box below.

Cheers!

Hello Nubians,

(Crazy cool Mr. Sinister cosplay)

I had so much fun this past weekend at New York Comic Con! I have a lot of interesting post lined up and I wanted to start with one featuring some of my favorite cosplay costumes I saw during the convention. From DC comics to Marvel to film and video games, it was a fascinating year.

I went to the very first New York Comic Con and it's definitely been interesting to see how it's grown in every single aspect. I didn't cosplay at the very first convention but I've been doing it for many years now. Cosplay is a beautiful thing because costumes are cool and who the hell said they can only be worn during Halloween? Cosplay allows you to celebrate things you're a fan of such as writing or art, video games, comics, films and many times you end up giving it your own twist. Cosplay also brings people together. Just like any hobby, you find people who are into it and you end up making a ton of friends and having intense conversations about how you put your looks together and what inspired you.

New York Comic Con doesn't disappoint in the cosplay department. Though there are always some days that are better than others, I always walk out with a handful of things minimum that completely blew my mind.

Enjoy the photos below, more to come soon.

Super cute Mega Man babe.

Disney Love -Kingdom Hearts.

Aladdin and myself as Fantastic Mrs Fox.

Awesome rocker Harley Quinn. So in Love with that The Joker Jacket. Might try to make something similar eventually.

I've been seeing this guy for years. Never know what to call him. Ronald Mc Thor? Thor Mc Donald? Whatever, he's great.

Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg from The Fifth Element

Another cosplay Vet here. The great Hulkbuster. He went on to win some sort of cosplay contest during the convention. Ahead of him you'll see a pretty Psylocke.

Pretty sweet looking Hawkgirl.

Creature from the Black Lagoon.

Baby Jack Skellington from A Nightmare Before Christmas.

Little Deadpool and Hey look that's me! Cosplaying as Ghostrider.

Poor Superman.

Naruto fans are intense.

This Jason Voorhees meant business! Scary.

Dark Alice In Wonderland.

Wonder Woman and Wonder Baby Girl.

Myself as Gambit and a very awesome Carnage from Spiderman.

Wonder Woman, Hawk Girl, Killer Frost, and Dead Shot.

Barry Allen AKA The Flash.

Dead Pool Party.

Great times at the convention this year. I love to see how people step their game up every year at Comic Con. If you saw any out of this world cosplay this year at New York Comic Con please feel free to share below.

Cheers!
