New York Comic Con Is Almost Here!

As much as I'd love to comic con hop like many people I know, I don't always have the free time. My main jam will always be New York Comic Con. I've been attending since before Reedpop owned them in 2006. It's the Comic Convention I always try to clear up room for. I remember when there weren't that many people in attendance and there was such a special magical feel to it. Nowadays it's very populated and still holds some magic but in a different way.

DC Comics, this is quite epic. The big day has finally arrived. It looks like Catwoman and Batman are getting married! Of course, once we all knew this was happening, we were dying to see her wedding dress! The cosplay possibilties are bonkers. How many brides will we be seeing at Comic Con Conventions?

Hey Nubians,

The Anime NYC Convention powered by Crunchyroll looks like it was so much fun! There was a nice variety of creative cosplay outfits and a vast amount of kawaii booths to satisfy any of your anime needs. It showcased the best of Japanese pop culture and featured unique exhibits, exclusive screenings, controversial panels, and so much knowledge from wall to wall! The halls were full of comicbooks, movies, clothing, plush animals, action figures, home decor... pretty much anything you can think of. My brother and longtime Nubia's Nonsense contributing photographer Daniel Mejia, stopped by the convention on my behalf to capture the energy.

Hello Nubians,

This year I went to New York Comic Con for 2 days and it was a lot of fun, but guess what? I didn't cosplay! I know, I know, crazy town. But I had just gotten back from Hawaii and I felt kind of rushed and decided not to do it this year. I have to be honest, it hurt my heart a little. If you've seen my cosplay looks from New York Comic Con past, you'd know I enjoy dressing up very much. When I saw all of the amazing looks from various comicbooks, video games, cartoons, tv shows, movies, etc. and saw all the detailed craftsmanship and time people put into their costumes...I felt a little sad for myself for missing out. However, it still made me happy to be in everyones presence. I was cheering them on in a weird way being on the other side admiring. With all of the time that goes into hair, make-up, sewing, and making armor amongst other things such as role play, it's cool to be part of this community of people. I've always believed it's therapeutic embodying these characters whether you want to play the hero or villain. We all go through different phases in our life where we may be considered the good or bad guy as do many of these characters.

Another funny thing about not cosplaying this year is that I had so much more time to enjoy booths. I got to take my time actually talking to people and touching merchandise because I wasn't being stopped every 2 seconds for photos. I'm hoping to share a few cool places I stopped by later this week.

This year I noticed a lot of people were coming up with original characters too which I thought was awesome. Last year I did an original mashup of characters partnering with my friend Kaori. I dressed as DC Comics Wonder Woman & Two-Face. You could check it out here.

Ghost Rider, Rugrats, Cuphead, Lydia & Beetlejuice, a few Anime looks, a awesome DC Cosplayers meet-up and more. Enjoy the photos below.

Cheers!

This past weekend I attended the Liberty City Anime Con with my brother and had a nice & interesting time. I walked the halls full of colorful wigs and DIY costumes with all sorts of props and contraptions and stopped every-so-often to take some cosplay photos of some of my favorite looks from the convention. They weren't all anime, I spotted some comicbook and video game characters as well. To be honest, I only dabble in Anime and I'm way more of a comicbook and comic con person because it's what I grew up with. However, I was intrigued when I heard about this con and I figured why not attend and open up to something new? I was impressed with the dedication these anime buffs have and understand why they have such a love for the genre. I've watched a few anime films before such as Princess Mononoke,  Kiki's Delivery Service and other Hayao Miyazaki titles. I also recommend the super trippy Cat Soup anime film directed by Tatsuo Satō and inspired by the work of manga artist Nekojiru for anyone who wants to feel confused and be amazed at the same time . I've read a few manga titles. I think my first ever may have been Socrates in Love by Kyoichi Katayama in the early 2000's.

Hey Nubians,

I follow DC Comics on Instagram and about 2 weeks ago I saw they posted the image above reading "Wonder Woman Day June 3, 2017". I was excited about it but I still haven't heard any news about it and the photo had no caption. It's kind of a mystery for now.

I was very upset at the end of last year when the United Nations stripped Wonder Woman of her Ambassador role less than 2 months after she was awarded with it. I believe she served as the perfect figure for empowering girls and women. Truly the message she sent was immensely more valuable to me than if she was 'real' or not. However people were protesting about her appearance being too sexy amongst other things which in my personal opinion misses the whole point (Haters).

Anyway, the new Wonder Woman film starring Gal Gadot is set to be released June 2nd... coincidence? I think not! It's going to be a glorious woman empowering weekend! Nice job DC Comics! Plus we get to wear cooler clothing because of the weather so yay! Cosplayers are going to have a hoot with this one. Perhaps I shall get involved in the cosplay adventures myself.

Being that it's #ThrowbackThursday and all... A few years ago I wrote a post about finding your inner Wonder Woman and thought I would re-share it below. The struggle to find your inner Wonder Woman might be one of the hardest journeys in your life but she's in there, so never stop. Life is tough but we can all prevail.

July 2011 Post
Sometimes I ponder... Why are we so hard on ourselves? Maybe I shouldn't Sometimes I ponder... Why are we so hard on ourselves? Maybe I shouldn't say "we" but I know I am. I mean, people always give me a lot of credit and tell me what a great job I'm doing with certain projects or daily activities and I feel like I never truly believe their compliments... Is that strange? Perhaps I haven't fully found my inner Wonder Woman.

A few ways to keep your inner Wonder Woman in tact
  • Believe in yourself
  • Know that you are beautiful inside and out
  • Look back at your prior achievements/success
  • Only look back for positive reasons
  • Keep working towards your dreams
  • Take a step back and realize how many lives you've touched
  • Know that YOU make this world a better place
  • Be nice to others (good karma)
  • Smile!
  • Spend quality time with loved ones
  • Take personal time for yourself (peace of mind)
Wearing Alice & Olivia for Payless booties, H&M shorts, Material Girl Belt, gla.MAR.ous headband, Misc Corset.
Don't battle yourself.
All super heroes need their faithful companions by the way.

I think I'm discovering my inner Wonder Woman a bit more everyday. I push myself hard and when I reach my goals I am NEVER satisfied! It's a good habit at times because I strive for more but it's a tough habit to live with nonetheless.

So I'll give you the same advice I've been giving myself for a while.... "Place your goals in the sky and go after them.... Can't fly? Well learn or find another way to reach them" The payoff will most likely be well worth it.

You can interpret that in whichever manner suits you best. I promise you, it's a good thing.
Toodles,
Xo Nubia Xo

P.S. Tis no secret I love comics eh?
