It's great to witness how the love of geeky fandom has through fashion, comic books, film, and video games. I believe that movies alone have helped Gen Z discover hidden geeky gems from the '80s and '90s. But let's talk about fashion now. Some apparel that you find at stores and honors our love of geek culture almost looks like straight-up cosplay. Some items are a bit more discreet. Below check out five items from different cool shops I'm smitten with for Spring/Summer.
In two days it will be the first official day of Spring. The weather has already started to feel warm & fresh. Everyone is starting to change what they're wearing along with their attitude. Light jackets are the new black. Spring breathes life into your wardrobe just as much as it does into your spirit. Skirts will reign and love games will take emerge into the air. I hope this Spring brings you balance.
It's funny that I bumped into this Cowgirl editorial from Vogue Japan featuring Stella Lucia because I've been talking about needing a new pair of cowboy boots for Spring.
Somedays I miss the desert dearly. I lived in Las Vegas for 4 years after being raised in New York City my whole life. At first, it was a drastic change, but after a while, I enjoyed the silence and mystery of the desert. The desert transmits a feeling of stillness and though it's dry, it always found a way to quench me spiritually.
Ever wonder "What am I wearing to work tomorrow?". I've been a freelance Digital Copywriter and Social Media Manager for different companies for many years. I've always loved and appreciated the freedom it gives me. A lot of times, I use a variety of coffee shops and other visually pleasing places as my office. I wear backpacks all the time and try to keep my fashion & style cute and comfortable for the majority of the week.
Hey Nubians, "Art Is The Ultimate Way To Express What You're Feeling And Dreaming Of." Who doesn't love art? Art can be considered a variety of different creative outlets. Many people consider fashion and their way of styling an artform. It expresses how they feel and showcases it to those around them. Others consider dance or theatre their art form. Of course, there is always drawing and painting. I LOVE to draw. I wouldn't consider myself one of the greats, but I enjoy it and it helps ease my mind. I am fascinated with murals and street art. The idea of completing a well thought out mural is probably somewhere on my bucket list. I admire artist with such vision and dedication who put their masterpieces together in the middle of the day while random strangers stroll by and just stare at them... I would assume it's not a distraction to a focused well focused and determined mind.
Baby, It's Cold Outside. We're currently going through a winter storm right now in NYC... literally right now as I type. A lot of brave fashion and style bloggers are going out to capture some beautiful photography in this Winter Wonderland. I believe I'm quite brave on the regular, but I have a good book "Bonfire" by Krysten Ritter to be exact and some hot tea calling my name. I might just finish the novel today.
Do you guys like my outfit photo in front of this super pimpin' McDonald's? My friend thought it would be a fun place to take a little fashion photography. I'm sure you can find some sarcasm somewhere in that. I've probably walked into this Mc Donalds in Times Square about 3 times in my life. It's pretty fancy compared to other ones I've been to in New York. I hear there are way nicer McDonald's all over the world... Why'd we get stuck with the mediocre ones? What's up with that?!
My Favorite Season Has Arrived And The Air Is Crisp As I Love So Dearly.
I had this outfit post in my drafts section for about a month and then I took another hiatus from my blog. I know, I've done this often within the last year or so... perhaps too often, but I can't continue to write when I'm not inspired anymore. It's wasteful and disrespectful to my craft, myself, and my readers. I must conserve my inspiration for projects I can fully immerse myself in. A burnt out person is not a happy person at all. The internet finally took a toll on me sometime last year and I felt my brain was FRIED. I've been working in Social Media Marketing for 10 years now, way back when everything was starting and now the internet has become overwhelming and full of so much nothing. I see too much garbage out there and distasteful clutter that doesn't help or encourage anyone. I've taken a break from my Social Media & Copy Writing career with companies for now ... and maybe forever. I'm going to pursue other projects and refresh my mind. I will still be online and on my blog sharing things I love such as fashion, reviews, geek culture, creative story telling, etc. I'm hope to spread inspiration & positivity to others and I will do that by respecting myself first.
On a happier note, isn't this outfit cute? My friend took these photos about a month ago, and when I was looking at them today I thought, these colors are perfect for Fall! Green, orange, mustard yellow, burgundy, ugh! I can not wait to start wearing sweaters. This outfit has very much a hippy girl vibe to it. The shoes are from Donald J Pliner and the dress was a gift from my mother, I believe she picked it up a a random boutique (not sure the name). The awesome sunglasses are from ALDO.
Lastly... -I'll be making a post on Fall Fashion Tips soon. Stay Tuned! -Life is too short to not do what you love. You have more support than you know most times. -Pumpkin Spice Everything... Apple Picking... Haunted House... Halloween Decorations... Go Nuts.
I feel like I am, and really we all are kissing the Summer of 2017 adios and farewell quite quickly. I don't know about you, but this Summer flashed right by me. I decided to go back from the west coast to the east for a while and that took a lot of my time and energy. Moving is a pain in the ass. I've also gone through a lot of growing pains this year so far which has been both great and terrible at the same time if that makes any sense. As we get older, we realize we don't love the same things we used to and we start realizing what really matters. But like most things in life, the loss of love in a hobby just like in a person is hard. I've lost and gained a lot so far this year and for that I am grateful but left battling a bittersweet sensation.
Hey Nubians, "It's not about brand, it's about style" When I was a young little girl, I used to wake up on Saturday mornings with my brothers to watch the X-Men animated series cartoons. Later, I'd get into the Batman and Spiderman animated series as well. This was my introduction to comicbooks too. I would also play video games: Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Nights, just to name a few. When I became about 15 years old, I started getting very interested in fashion & style and started separating myself from the crowd and trends to create my own vision through things that inspired me. That was the beginning of a long style, beauty & geek journey that is still evolving till this day. Here are a few ways Comicbooks, Art, and Pop Culture have transformed my style... 1) Confidence I have always told my friends that there's a big difference between fashion and style. I think style is made up of attitude & courage. I grew up watching Super Heroes / Heroines and Villains on television and this helped me develop a certain kind of confident attitude. As a young girl, I gravitated towards female characters first and seeing strong females such as Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Jean Grey, or someone like Princess Mononoke from an anime film made me feel like I could overcome so much. Whether it was Jean Grey dealing with her Phoenix Saga, or Batgirl having to lie to her father the Commissioner all the time, these ladies were always overcoming hurdles and I found it so inspiring. Confidence in style is probably going to be your strongest allie... even if you feel a little crazy you must own what you do.
2) Color Boom! Pow! Wham! Bang! I am such an enormous fan of color and making a statement. When I wear black too often I feel like my soul starts turning off. I love fashionable colors and textures and things that POP in general. It's fun and different and allows your imagination to run wild. I always admired Roy Lichtenstein artwork and how cool yet tragic some of the pieces were. I always had so much color around me within art and comicbooks. It stuck with me throughout life for sure. Color therapy is real and it will brighten up your day. Betty & Veronica from Archie Comics had such unique, cool and colorful style and probably the most relatable to everyday wear. I would enjoy their looks just as much as the stories.
3) Conventions I started going to New York Comic Con at the Javitz Center around 2004 or 2005 maybe? Reed Pop didn't run the convention yet, I'm not sure who did. But Ever since I started going I never stopped. The cosplayers inspired me so much because they were building amazing costumes from scratch just like fashion designers make clothing. Some of the costumes I saw must have included so much imagination and creative technique. I remember witnessing so much Lolita and Harajuku style and being blown away by this Steam Punk panel I went to around 2006. It was sooooo inspiring and made me want to step my game up in both cosplaying and fashion. If you think you can't get inspired by a Comic Con convention you're terribly mistaken. Step out of your comfort zone and try something new. You'll thank me later for the cultural explosion you'll witness.
These are just the 3 top reasons I can think of off the top of my head. In reality there are endless amounts of ways geek and pop culture have influenced my style and I'm so happy about it. Always pay attention to the things around you. Slow down and really look. They might influence you more than you think and change your life in all sorts of magical ways. Cheers! Xo Nubia Xo
